The local boy scouts and their parents visited the museum and enjoyed learning about the history of the weapons, artifacts, and helmets. They held onto a Civil War Union sword, looked at the helmets, and carried rifles from the Indian Wars on the plains and the Vietnam War! Thank you very much for the visit!!!
The museum held a major remembrance of the June 6th, 1944, attack on German forces and fortifications at and near Normand Beach in France. Former Army Ranger and Airborne Frank Lombardi spoke about the expectations that were placed on American paratroopers who jumped behind enemy lines and were fighting as they hit the ground. An entire history of this battle was presented to the crowd and an interesting exhibit of Omaha Beach was donated to the museum.
Thank you for the support of the Rocky Point Historical Society that was present for a visit to the museum. Your help in adding local names to the Wall of Honor has greatly impacted this important veterans structure. They have provided names of local military service from the Revolutionary War to current times!!
Thank you to Suffolk County Legislator Chad Lennon, Steve Tumulty, and Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner for honoring Mr. Thomas J. Morris on his 100th Birthday. This Rocky Point veteran served in the United States Army-Air Force and was in the air over Japan at the same time that the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. At the end of the war, he transported Japanese officers from Korea back to Japan and served there until the start of the Korean War.
Thank you for Don and Cathy Bakers for coming down to the museum and donating World War I artillery shells. Cathy is holding onto a picture of her father who fought over-seas during the Battles of St. Mihiel and the massive Argonne-Muesse Offensive that helped the Triple Entente/Allies/Western Powers. These shells represent the strength of the United States to fight major battles to support the British and French at the end of the war. The shells were polished, and they have distinctive designs that have been engraved into them. Whereas the United States entered the war during the later part of the fighting, General John J. Pershing and his officer corps, quickly drafted, trained, supplied, and moved American forces into the Western Front. American "Dough Boys" turned the tide of this war to help achieve victory against the Germans as seen by these armaments.
Thank you to the men and women of Leisure Village who came down for a special visit to the museum. We would like to thank all of you for your service to your community and nation. Your patriotic outfits were a nice touch to show support for all of sacrifices of our military.
Thank you for the Leisure Village Gang to visit the Veterans Wall of Honor and Military Museum. Please come down at any time! God Bless America!
